Content Strategy Series P5 – How to set content goals – Episode 29

Join Susan Diaz, Content Strategist, as she explains the difference between setting goals and getting clear on context, why the order matters and how it can help you create amazing content.

The question around goals is often one of the first things discussed in any intake exercise with a strategy professional. But I call bullshit on that order.

As much as goal setting is of extreme importance, it’s rarely the first thing that you will do unless you’re running a campaign. For a more holistic content strategy, before you set goals, you need context.

Think of it like training for a marathon. Before you set goals for yourself as a runner, you would ask yourself a number of questions. Maybe:

Who else is running?
What kind of conditions you’ll have when you’re running?
What access you have to professionals and gear?
What shape you’ve been in recently?
And what strengths you’d like to leverage?

Once you have all of that information, you would set yourself a goal. Perhaps it is that you’d like to improve your finish time by 10%. Or maybe it is that you want to place in the top 10 runners.

See? First context, then goals.

Before we start to set the goals, let’s make some differentiations. What is the difference between a goal and an objective? To my mind, a goal is a more over arching direction that you’re heading in. And the objectives are the milestones of the actual things that you would need to do to help you get there.

So here is my formula to help you set a goal:
Ask yourself:

What over arching thing will I do?
By when will I do it?
And what results will it get me?

For example, I will increase my subscriber base, this year, to get 10% more revenue. Within that, you could have an objective like: Build an opt-in for my website to get 500 new subscribers, in the first quarter.

Simply put, the tactics that you use will each be supported by an objective. Make sure to use the same formula to get to your objectives that you did to get to your goal. If you superimpose this on a smart formula to make sure that you are on track, give yourself 500 brownie points. That is the actual process that I use.

Again, different level of detail for different levels of need, but that’s the process. Go ahead and steal it. It’s yours.

Best Tools To Use For Content Marketing

If you’re trying to figure out the best way to manage and develop your content, there are a few tools you should know about.

0:11 You Can Use Google Analytics to Aid in Content Marketing
0:36 You Can Use Quora to Aid in Content Marketing
0:55 You Can Use BuzzSumo to Aid in Content Marketing
1:25 You Can Use Canva to Aid in Content Marketing
2:02 You Can Use Copyscape to Aid in Content Marketing

The first is Google Analytics. This tool allows you to track the performance of your content and see how people are engaging with it. You can see which parts of the content are most popular, and where people might have gotten lost along the way, or even just dropped off. You can also use this tool to track how much traffic your content is driving to your site.

The second tool you can use is Quora. This is a great way to find out what questions people have about your product or service. It will help you identify keywords that people are using when they search for answers, which is helpful for creating content that targets those topics.

Another tool is BuzzSumo. BuzzSumo allows you to find popular content based on certain keywords and topics. This tool helps you find the most shared content about topics that relate to yours, so it’s a good way to see what’s trending and what others have found success with before. You can also use this tool to find out who’s sharing your competitors’ content on social media so that you can get in touch with them and ask for a link exchange or something similar.

The fourth tool you can use in your content marketing is called Canva. Canva is a graphic design software that allows you to create graphics for social media or blog posts, or really anywhere else where you need a graphic. It’s free, but it does have some limitations on the number of images you can use each month. If you want more than that, then there are paid plans starting at $12 per month that give you unlimited access to all their templates and images. Canva can make it easy for you to create graphics and designs for your product or business.

And finally, an important tool to use for conducting content marketing is Copyscape. This tool checks for plagiarism in your content, so that you know if someone else has been using your work without giving you credit for it. This can help you avoid any legal issues down the line if someone else tries to claim ownership over something that belongs to you.

What is Content Marketing? &t=14s

What’s a Brand Style Guide?
A style guide is not a list of rules; it’s more like a list of preferences of the creators of the guide. It will include suggestions for punctuation, words to use and not use, capitalization, and much more.

Its main purpose is to keep your writing consistent across all pieces of content. Your website, physical collateral such as brochures and booklets, apps, and advertising should conform to your brand style guide.

Most corporations use AP (Associated Press) style, though it was created for journalists. It’s also widely used in content for the web and marketing and communications.

Especially if you have multiple contributors for the content you produce and publish, a brand style guide can help standardize your language and guard against bias, whether intended or not.

You need a brand style guide for the same reason you need guidelines for how your visual assets are used. Here’s a section from Instagram’s extensive guide to the use of their brand assets, such as the logo and icon.
brand style guide

Their goal is a consistent appearance for their brand, no matter where it appears.

A writing style guide operates in much the same way. If you capitalize a word in one paragraph and not another, your content will be inconsistent and less than professional.

The web is a competitive place; there is always someone else waiting to take your customers and prospects if you falter. Professionally-written content gives you an advantage over your competition and helps add credibility to your articles. You won’t build thought leadership without well-written, consistently-styled content.
How Do You Use a Style Guide?
Nine Common Questions that a Style Guide Will Answer

There are many more questions, but these nine are the ones I’ve looked up most frequently and have the most questions about.

Which Style Guide to Use

There are numerous style guides for different writing purposes. The Chicago Manual of Style is used primarily in the book publishing industry. In academia, you’ll find Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association stylebooks. In the news and journalism world, the AP Stylebook (Associated Press) is most used. The AP Stylebook was originally created for newspapers, where space has traditionally been scarce, so it leans toward saving characters wherever possible.

Because it’s used by journalists, AP is the most current. It’s updated every year, so if you need guidance regarding technology or world events, it’s an excellent resource.

Although writing for the web does not necessitate space-saving measures, web copy should be brief and to the point, with short sentences and bullet lists preferred over paragraphs. For this reason, when a style guide is used, much of the web follows AP style.
Create Your Own Brand Style Guide

No matter which style guide you use, there will be areas in which you may differ with their choices.

For example, on this site, I follow AP style with a couple of exceptions. I use italics for titles of books, magazines, and works of art, whereas AP does not use italics at all.

I also firmly embrace the Oxford Comma; that is the comma after the and in a series. For example: I had bacon, eggs, and toast for breakfast.

Five Essentials for Brand Style Guides – NEW Resource Promo!

Get the Style Guide Kit:

This one time (at band camp?), a logo I designed was butchered. But that experience led to an epiphany: I didn’t set my client up for success. I didn’t give him the information he needed to make visual decisions for his brand in the future. I just sent him the logo files in a zip folder and said, “Thanks!” And that was it.

What I learned is that whenever we hand work over to our clients, we need to give them an instruction manual. This is especially important for branding projects. But the same thing applies to anything we make for other people.

So think back onto your last projects. Did you set your clients up for success? If you work in-house, is your team all speaking the same visual language? If you own a brand, are you being clear with your vendors?

It’s something worth thinking about, especially if you’ve ever been in a situation like mine. Seeing your work out in the wild is a nightmare if the work is twisted and ruined.

Information is everywhere now, and sometimes we just need to know what to look for. There’s one thing that can solve a ton of these awkward situations… and in branding, it’s called a Style Guide. Style Guides serve as the instruction manual for the brand. It outlines the rules that designers have to follow when they’re working with the brand. And while the concept sounds restrictive, sometimes it’s nice to have clear boundaries. To have a neat sandbox to play in.

Some other terms that mean the same thing are Style Guidelines, Brand Guidelines, Brand Bible, Brand Manual, or simply Style Manual.

At a minimum, I would expect a Brand Style Guide to include:

1. An outline of all the logo and visual assets available
2. Guidance on when to use each version
3. Color and typography usage
4. Spacing and layout guidelines
5. Strong “DO NOTs” – things like squishing, stretching, and butchering the logo

This stuff feels self-explanatory… but what if your “self” wasn’t a designer? If I gave you a box of amazing ingredients like white truffles, wagyu steaks, and fresh uni… would you know what to do with them? Without a recipe, most of us would make Gordon Ramsay cry.

So set your work for success. Send off your designs with a style guide that follows that basic format. Clients will be clients, yes. Things will happen. But you’ll be able to prevent 90% of the mishaps we encounter in branding execution.

But style guides can go a lot deeper than that. For those of you who work in branding, you know this. They can be quite extensive. When I used to work with DreamWorks, we’d get style guides delivered to us in VOLUMES – literally several huge printed books for one movie.

Now, that’s probably overkill. But it’s going to benefit you and the brands that you work on in the long run to have a detailed Style Guide.

6 Common Guest Blogging Mistakes

Guest blogging provides a variety of awesome benefits: it can do wonders for your SEO, be a great way to get exposed to a brand new audience, help you improve your thought leadership, and better establish you as an expert in your industry.
As with anything technical there are many mistakes that potential guest bloggers make when strategizing, pitching, and writing guest blog posts.
Here are 6 of the top mistakes made by guest bloggers.
If you know of other mistakes please post them in a comment.

If you would like to trade a guest blog post please visit, for more information, or email me at [email protected]

And if you enjoy this video please subscribe to this channel for more great marketing videos!

1) Having NO Strategy
Guest blogging should be strategic.
Before you start trying to ramp up your guest blogging efforts, make sure you come up with a strategy that supports your goals for guest blogging.
Your goal may be to get backlinks, or to improve brand visibility or to promote your skills as a writer. Each of these goals will have a different strategy when it comes to writing a great guest blog post.
2) Targeting the Wrong Blogs

Once you’ve chosen your guest blogging strategy, you can then identify the right blogs to target.
This will involve a bit of research.
For example, if your strategy involves improving your search engine rankings for particular keywords, your strategy should involve creating content around those keywords and targeting blogs that will cover that topic on their blog.

3) Addressing Your Email to “Blog Manager”
As a blog manager, receiving an email that is addressed to “blog manager” instead of my actual name shows carelessness and is destined for the trash bin.
Do your homework. Check the blog’s contact page (if there is one) to determine who the blog manager is, or research published authors to identify appropriate email addresses.
4) Grammatical/Spelling Errors in the Pitch
If you can’t even craft a professional sounding and grammatically correct pitch about the blog post you want published, why should the blog manager think your blog post will be any better?
Spend time on your pitches. Proofread them.
5) Ignoring Guest Blogging Guidelines
Blog managers will rarely spend time with guest contributors helping them perfect their posts, so it’s the near-flawless contributions that usually make the final cut.
If you’ve gotten the go-ahead from a blog manager to draft a post based on your topic suggestion, make sure you strictly follow any guest blogging guidelines they’ve published or provided.
6) Provide Quality Posts
The articles you write for external blogs should be of the highest quality.
You need to both impress the blog manager enough to publish it, and capture the attention of the new audience you’re exposed to so they’ll want to check out your own website/blog.
Make sure the quality of your contribution is on par with the quality of other content on that blog.

How to Become a Guest Contributor | Otter PR

Becoming a guest contributor for a publication is an extremely powerful way for thought leaders to build their credibility. Being published in a national, specialist, or trade publication in your area of expertise is a great way to show people that you are an authority on a subject.

Teen Titans GO! To The Movies Exclusive Clip | Time Cycles | @dckids

Now Playing Only in Theaters!

Buy now on YouTube Movies:

#TeenTitansGOMovie #TeenTitansGOToTheMovies #TTGTTM #Raven #Robin #Starfire #BeastBoy #Cyborg

When the Teen Titans go to the big screen, they go big! “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in their first feature film extravaganza—a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the super hero genre, complete with musical numbers.

It seems to the Teens that all the major super heroes out there are starring in their own movies—everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

Will Arnett (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”) and Kristen Bell (“Frozen”) lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network’s animated TV show, which also stars Greg Cipes (TV’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s “Spider-Man”) as Robin, Khary Payton (“The Walking Dead”) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the “My Little Pony” franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake”) as Starfire, reprising their roles from the series.

The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic and Horvath, based on characters from DC. Michail, Will Arnett and Peggy Regan are producing, with Sam Register, Jelenic, and Horvath serving as executive producers. Apart from Arnett, all are “Teen Titans GO!” series contributors.

Discover how humans lost their fur as they evolved from primates, and why we still have hair on our bodies.

We have lots in common with our closest primate relatives. But comparatively, humans seem a bit… underdressed. Instead of thick fur covering our bodies, many of us mainly have hair on top of our heads— and a few other places. So, how did we get so naked? And why do we have hair where we do? Nina G. Jablonski explores the evolution of human hair.
